Psychological Assessment for Law Enforcement Cadets and Private Security
Professionals Under PA Acts 120 and 235 and Federal Guidelines
Since September 11th, 2001, Americans have realized the necessity of protecting our homeland security. Thus, training security and law enforcement professionals to provide a first line of protection in various sectors of our society has become a top priority. Dr. Eimer specializes in formally assessing security and law enforcement candidates (Municipal, State and Federal) for their psychological fitness to appropriately handle a lethal weapon under both PA Act 235 (Security Professionals), PA Act 120 (Law Enforcement professionals), and Federal Guidelines. A "lethal weapon" includes, but is not limited to, a firearm, edged weapon, nightstick, billy club, expandable ASP type baton, or any other weapon calculated to produce serious bodily harm or death. Private security and public law enforcement personnel are vested with a position of public/private trust. At some time, they may be required to exercise significant physical strength and tolerate extreme emotional stress in exercising their protective duties. It is the examining psychologist's job to determine if the candidate is capable psychologically of handling himself or herself in such situations. As such, the psychologist evaluates the candidate's intelligence, social comprehension and judgment, impulse control, potential for violence, personality, and any other psychological traits and factors that might affect his or her ability to safely and appropriately handle a lethal weapon. The Psychological Testing required by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania under both Act 235 for Security Professionals and Act 120 for Police and Law Enforcement Officer candidates includes the administration of a psychodiagnostic clinical interview, the MMPI Test (i.e., Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory), and ancillary measures. The examination typically takes around two hours.
